Men’s Styling Guide: Interview Outfit

What is the dress code for an interview?

Interview dress code is entirely dependent on the job you’re applying for. Every workplace has its own vibes, and this will affect how you should dress for your interview. Now, whatever that vibe is, you’ll want to match it, but also stand out from your fellow candidates, all without going too rogue. It’s a delicate balance and it’s all too easy to fall either side of the faux pas balance beam.

Do your homework, carry on reading Perci’s interview outfit guide, and you’ll be absolutely fine.

What to wear to an interview?

You’re quite literally dressing to impress, so even if you’re applying for a job with a casual dress code, always dress up as opposed to down. A tuxedo is too much, a pair of tracksuit bottoms is probably not enough—let’s get into that Goldilocks zone, shall we?

Business Formal Outfit

For a formal business interview, start things off with a good, high-quality shirt. You can’t do better than Perci’s Poplin Shirt in this department. Next up we’re going to touch base with some well-fitting, tailored Suit Trousers. That’s your basics sorted, so let’s circle back and add some panache. A good tie will set you apart from the competition, showing that you know what you’re doing beyond the bare necessities. Round your outfit off with a matching tailored Suit Jacket and you’re already two steps ahead of everybody else.

With a formal interview, your shoes matter too. There’s no point doing all that beautiful work up top if you’re going to rock up in a pair of old trainers. Slip on a pair of Gibson Shoes and you can’t go wrong.

Business Casual Outfit

Business casual ain’t easy. If the job you’re applying for is pretty formal but the boss has been known to pop the radio on of a Friday afternoon whilst you navigate the mean streets of Spreadsheet Town, you’re going to want to show your potential employer that you mean business but you’ve also got a bit of personality about you.

Stick to Suit Trousers on the bottom half, but don’t be afraid to have a bit of fun with a Cuban Shirt on top. Something that says you’re business breezy. Ditch the tie—you don’t need it where you’re going, right to the top of Mt. Business without breaking a damn sweat.

Smart Casual Outfit

For pretty much any other job, smart casual is the one. Overdressing for an interview can be just as jarring as underdressing in certain circumstances, but smart casual is safe. Grab yourself a Knitted Polo—the king of all smart-casual shirts—pair that with some sensible yet stylish Straight Leg Trousers, chuck a pair of Loafers on your trotters, and you are ready to smash it. Other applicants need not apply.

What not to wear to an interview

For almost all interviews it’s best to do the basics well. Nothing with a slogan on it, nothing too casual, nothing you’d feel embarrassed to wear when meeting your well-to-do in-laws for the first time. You should look and feel confident without coming across brash. As a rule of thumb, never go less formal than the smart casual guide above unless you’re absolutely certain it’ll play to your advantage at whichever workplace environment you’re soon to be joining.
