Smart Casual Outfits for Men: The 2026 Style Guide
Having one specific skill that you perform brilliantly, time after time, is great. Perhaps you’ll make a career for yourself like Eddie the Eagle (rubbish ski jumper, presumably pretty capable plasterer), but, when that one strength is stripped away, what remains? The real intricacy lives in those liminal spaces, the things in between—there’s a reason Thomas Müller, the famously positionless ‘Raumdeuter’ (space interpreter) of German football, has played more matches for Bayern Munich than anybody else in history. Smart casual is the Raumdeuter of men’s style. A carefully balanced look that can so easily sway too far in either direction. Perci is going to help you strike a perfect style equilibrium.

What Is Smart Casual for Men?
Imagine an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place at a birthday meal, nor on the protagonist of an advert for a reliable family car, nor on the presenter of a live Saturday morning TV show. This is smart casual, and it’s notoriously difficult to do well, as evidenced by every football pundit of the past three decades.
What Is the Official Smart Casual Dress Code for Men?
A full suit is not smart casual. A full suit is just smart. A tracksuit is casual. The official smart casual dress code is, in the words of Hector Barbosa, more what you’d call guidelines than actual rules. The key is to mix and match so that the balance is just right, and pick items that are on the smart side of casual or the casual side of smart.
What Should You Not Wear for a Smart Casual Outfit?
Nothing is necessarily off limits. However, anything that falls at the extreme ends of the casual to smart spectrum is probably best avoided. We’re working within a condensed wavelength of style, and we’re plucking items from within that. Have we put that clearly enough? No. Probably not. Read on and let us show you…
Are Jeans Actually Considered Smart Casual?
High-quality jeans are, yes, absolutely. All of the Jeans we design here at Percival are well at home in a smart casual setting.

The Essential Pieces of a Proper Smart Casual Wardrobe
To make this as simple as possible, we’re going to show you the cornerstones of any self-respecting smart casual wardrobe. Make sure you’ve got these and you won’t go far wrong.
Smart Casual Shirts for Men
A button-down Shirt is ideal for a smart casual fit as it allows for versatility. Smarten up with cotton and a solid colour, or go more casual with an open collar and a pattern. Tuck in to formalise, untuck to relax—the Ru Paul Rule.
Smart Casual Trousers for Men
Proper, well-made jeans are a great option, as previously discussed. Alternative trouser options are available, though, and paired with the right shirt or polo, a pair of Suit Trousers can do a lot of heavy lifting in a smart casual outfit.
Smart Casual Blazers for Men
Blazers are brilliant for this particular style, because the slightly more relaxed cut means it can handle less formal fits than a suit jacket, and it’ll hold up on its own. A blazer can chat to anyone, whereas a suit jacket can feel a bit uncomfortable outside of its close circle of friends.
Smart Casual Knit Polo Shirts for Men
There is no better smart casual shirt than the Knitted Polo. It can just do everything. It’s what Prince was to pop music, it’s Ruud Gullit playing every position on the pitch, it’s Jack of all trades—master of the flipping lot.

Blazers, Overshirts, or Jackets: Which One Earns Its Keep?
Right, it’s not a competition, but for argument’s sake, let’s say it is. Each of these has its respective strengths:
Blazers are elegant and classy but they tend toward the formal. You’ve got to be careful what you pair it with in order to ensure you don’t look like you’re half-wearing a suit, or that your top half is here for a wedding and your bottom half is off to the pub. Still, used correctly, a blazer can be devastating. In a good way.
Overshirts are ultra-versatile but unless you go relatively formal on your lower half, you run the risk of erring a little too casual. Having said that, the right overshirt can be just as smart as a blazer if styled with a classy shirt or classic Tee.
Paired with tailored trousers and a shirt, a Jacket can really elevate a smart casual outfit. Something like a Leo Harrington Jacket, a Western Trucker Jacket, or a Marcel Cord Jacket can work wonders. Notice the trucker jacket is paired with a smart shirt and tie on our model. You have to put in the effort to match the casual feel of the jacket with the smart basics underneath. Jackets take a bit of thought in order to work in a smart casual style, but they can be your closest ally.

Smart Casual Outfit Ideas for Different Occasions
Different occasions call for different outfits. Take our hand, intrepid smart casual style explorer, and let us walk you through it.
Workplace Outfits by Season
In summer, go for Tailored Trousers and a block colour Polo. In cooler weather, thrown on something like a Felted Relaxed Jumper.
Smart Casual Work Events
For a work event, you can be a little more adventurous, go for a patterned Polo.
Smart Casual Date Night Looks
Turning up in a full suit to a date runs the risk of your potential romantic interest running away and telling their mates you were giving off serial killer energy. Don’t do that. Maybe just chuck on a nice pair of Straight Leg Jeans with a Linen Shirt and a classy Workshirt or Jacket, and you’ll be just fine.
Men’s Smart Casual Wedding Outfits
Your bottom half is going to be relatively smart, here. Can’t be wearing jeans to a wedding, it’s just not cricket. We’re going for the Navy Blue Tailored Two Piece Suit with a plain white tee and your best sunnies.
Smart Casual Party Or Celebration Outfits for Men
The guidelines are looser here. We’re going for Seb Inverted Pleat Trousers with a Short Sleeve Cuban Shirt, and you can’t stop us.

How to Dress Smart Casual in 2026
Smart casual is perhaps the style that changes most with the times. Suits may experience fluctuation in what kind of cut is fashionable, leisurewear and loungewear may differ slightly depending on sportswear innovations, but smart casual tends to act as a style spokesperson for the current zeitgeist. Here’s how to do it in 2026.
Soft Tailoring (Sharp Without the Stiffness)
Tailoring from head to toe can be smart casual, but not too much tailoring. A pleated trouser or a tailored blazer is fine, just not a fully tailored three-piece suit. You get the idea. Looking effortlessly sharp is always stylish.
Choosing Patterns and Textures
It’s good to mix and match patterns and textures in a modern smart casual fit. If you’re going for linen trousers, try a cotton or knitted shirt. Pair denim jeans with softer fabrics up top. Try a patterned shirt with block colour trousers and jacket, or a patterned overshirt with a plain tee. If you’re going for two patterned items in one fit, make sure they match. To be honest, we’d stick to one patterned item per outfit, and make it the star of the show.
Colour Combinations That Never Miss
Earth tones compliment each other, a white tee or shirt will allow you to be more expressive with your trousers and outer layer, sticking to either warm or cool colours is always a good bet. To be totally honest, you know a good colour scheme when you see it. Keep the basics above in mind, use the outfits you see on this site as a guide, and create your own colour combos—that’s part of the fun of it.
