Where did the fireman clasp originate, and how did it enter fashion?

The fireman clasp (or turnout clip) originated in 19th and early 20th-century firefighter gear. Designed to allow quick fastening and easy release while wearing heavy protective gloves, these spring-loaded metal hooks replaced delicate traditional buttons that could melt or snap under extreme heat. Today, heritage menswear brands use fireman clasps on canvas and workwear jackets as a bold, functional, and industrial hardware detail.
